X marks the spot
Following the dissolution of Parliament, Nick Hurd, Jenny Willott and Angela Smith are all third sector spokespeople for their political parties and take this pre-election
opportunity to summarise what they would do if elected on 6 May

‘These people are very important to me and what we want to do.’ That is how David Cameron put it when he asked me to be shadow minister for charities; social enterprise; and volunteering. Eighteen months later, I hope that this message now rings true for all but the most politically blinkered.

Jenny Willott was elected MP for Cardiff Central in 2005, and held various roles in charities prior to winning this seat, including head of Victim Support in South Wales. In Parliament her roles have included Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and, most recently, the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for the Cabinet Office.

Angela Smith MP was appointed Minister for the Third Sector in the Cabinet Office in June 2009. She has also been MP for Basildon and East Thurrock since 1997. She was formerly parliamentary private secretary to the Prime Minister, parliamentary under-secretary of state for the Department for Communities and Local Government. She has been a county councillor at Pitesa, Basildon, a campaigner and head of public relations at the League Against Cruel Sports as well as a trainee accountant at the London Borough of Newham. She is married and interests include swimming, animal welfare and the works of Oscar Wilde.
