Welcome to the Guide to Finance - Clarissa Dann

Welcome

Welcome to the Caritas Guide to Finance. Although nobody would underestimate the core responsibility associated with governing and managing charities, a good understanding of the mechanics of financial reporting and investment management is absolutely crucial if charities are going to stay afloat in this challenging economic environment. One wonders if quite so much would have been lost in Icelandic banks by the sector if there was more awareness of the basics of risk and reward.

The contents of this guide have been developed in consultation members of the Charity Investors’ Group (CIG) and the Charities Finance Directors Group (CFDG) and the Charity Commission. Its purpose is to provide what amounts to a summary of how the ‘system’ works and where further guidance is available from. Importantly it also explains how to get the best from the wide range of accounting and investment expertise available.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the technical advisory board who came up with the ideas for the articles, provided me with the necessary information and background, and checked the articles once I had written them. Our advertisers and sponsors have also played a unique role in supporting something that we believe will remain an essential management tool for the sector.
