Understanding philanthropy
Cathy Pharoah and Jenny Harrow introduce the UK’s first research Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy...
The UK charity sector depends on private giving and philanthropy for one-quarter of its income, while volunteers represent 4 per cent of its workforce. Yet we take this remarkable resource for granted. We have invested very little in understanding what encourages and sustains giving behaviour beyond the successful fundraising and marketing strategies which enable charities to reach annual income generation targets. This is all about to change. In November 2007 the four successful bids which together will constitute the UK’s first research Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy were announced. The Centre has been funded jointly by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Office of the Third Sector (OTS), Carnegie UK Trust and Scottish Government, providing a total joint investment of £2.2million over 5 years. After this time the Centre will need to raise funds to continue. The Centre hopes to begin its work formally in spring 2008.
