Top 25 auditors hold their own in tough times

The top 25 firms of charity auditors provide auditing services to 2889 charities, auditing £33.6bn between them,
according to the latest Top 3000 Charities from CaritasData, published in March 2010. Average audit fees ranged from £5,000 for clients with income of up to £1m through to £89,000 for clients with income in excess of £80m. Total income audited is up from £32.2bn a year ago with average audit fees broadly unchanged for income levels below £40m.
The top five in the pecking order is headed up by Horwath Clark Whitehill, with 169 clients covering income of over £4bn, displacing PricewaterhouseCoopers from the top position a year ago. The National Audit Office, retains its fourth place at 30 clients, covering around £2.5bn has a particular role auditing organisations such as The British Museum, which is not able to put its audit work out to accounting firms.
Eight auditors (down from 19 a year ago) showed net increases in audited income: Horwath Clark Whitehill, Grant Thornton, haysmacintyre, Buzzacott, Nexia Smith & Williamson, the National Audit Office, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and KPMG.
