The road to recovery
Graham Wareham shares the road the charity took to efficiency and says the sector needs to be more commercial to beat the recession
The official recession may be over but for charities and other public service providers the bleak midwinter is just starting. Most commentators are talking about cuts in government funding being in the order of 10 to 15 per cent and we are expecting consumer wealth to be squeezed from a combination of higher taxes and rises in the cost of borrowing. At Leonard Cheshire Disability we have had two very difficult years recording significant net deficits. Our role is to improve the quality of life for disabled people, yes the prognosis for the future still represents a challenge but the charity is focussed and is clear about achieving its objectives.
