The report indicates there are 23,806 charities on the register, reporting a total annual income of £12.9bn, 355 of which are cross-border charities. Two-thirds of all Scottish charities have an annual income of less than £25,000 and 93 per cent of the total charitable sector is accounted for by 5.6 per cent of charities. OSCR CEO Jane Ryder said that publishing the profile was part of OSCR’s commitment to increasing transparency and public accountability of charities. Next steps include publishing studies reporting on compliance levels.
The Charity Commission for England andWales has published its report for the year ending 31 March 2008 on 9 July. Highlights include the registration of 4,953 new charities and a 29 per cent increase in annual returns filed online. This was the first full year of its new performance indicators (KPIs), agreed with HM Treasury. The report shows how four of the six KPIs were met in the period.
Dame Suzi Leather (chair) and Andrew Hind (chief executive) said in their introduction: ‘With a reduction in our funding of 5 per cent in real terms, for each of the next three years, we have had to make difficult decisions about our activities and resources.’
