Businesses are experienced at developing strategies to achieve their goals which usually comprise expansion of market and growth. In the voluntary sector, more and more organisations are realising that, although their goals may differ from those in the private sector, they also need to evaluate their operations, define their objectives and detail how they will achieve them. As opposed to taking their goals from shareholders and board members, charities need to consult a broader spectrum of stakeholders: service providers, service users, trustees and board. In the cases of medical and support charities, the carers and families of service users are important sources of input.
