The end of the road for the cheque?

Helen Doyle explains why the cheque may be removed from our payments vernacular in 2018 and what is being done to ensure charities are not adversely affected by its removal

The use of cheques has been in decline since 1990, and recent statistics show that the use of cheques has fallen by 40 per cent over the last five years. Each year cheque numbers continue to fall by 12 per cent. However, there are still certain situations or groups of people who remain reliant on cheques. in particular, cheques continue to play an important, albeit declining role, for the third sector and older consumers.

Helen Doyle is a senior consultant in the policy and research team at the Payments Council.

She joined the team in December 2007 and has led it’s work with the charity and voluntary sector over the last twelve months.

Previously, Helen worked for the research agency BMRB, where she specialised in financial policy research for government departments; and the University of Surrey, where she was a research fellow at the Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender.
