The cost of giving
Cathy Pharoah and Mark Pincher review the major charitable grantmakers expenditure and costs...
Giving money away can be a costly business, particularly if done effectively. Across the sector as a whole around £7bn is disbursed as grants. The grantmaking policies and practices of charitable trusts vary considerably, particularly in relation to inputs such as investment management, charity assessment, advice and intervention, monitoring and evaluation – not to mention the number and scale of their grants. The costs of their grantmaking vary accordingly, and many grantmakers have expressed frustration at the lack of meaningful cost baselines. This article reviews data on the expenditure and costs of the major charitable grantmakers, following our look at the costs of the fundraising and operating charities (see Cathy Pharoah's article, Big spenders).
