John Hildebrand asks whatever happened to diversification
Everyone knows that equity markets can fall sharply and that few of us sell everything just before it happens. Thankfully, most investors can take some comfort from not having put all their eggs in one basket. Diversification and uncorrelated assets are not new ideas, but they have become standard practice in recent years. However, almost every ‘modern’ version of diversifying a portfolio away from mainstream equities failed to help in 2008, just when we needed it most. Why?
