Shaking the foundations?
Cathy Pharoah looks at the values of grantmakers as well as the grants in her recent family foundation research
Foundations are rarely in the UK sector’s spotlight in their own right. Interest tends to focus on their role as a funding source, and so, for example, the recession has seen a spate of research (including my own!) looking at trends in their investment values and income. But although foundations are hugely important to sector financing, little attention is paid to understanding how their role might be sustained and grown, and their importance in major and family giving. What can be learned from international comparisons? Is the UK ahead, or behind, in levels of foundation philanthropy?
