Non-profit organisations tend to attract committed, enthusiastic recruits. But the realities of managing operations and staff effectively day-to-day need a lot more than that. As Debra Allcock Tyler noted in this magazine (see Mike Short and Debra Allcock Tyler's Viewpoint in Caritas, Issue 13, December 2008) managers in the voluntary sector are less likely to receive formalised management training than in other sectors. So how should third-sector bodies set about tackling this skills deficit?
