Pay differentials under scrutiny
Will Hutton, the left-leaning economist who is vice-chair of the Work Foundation has agreed to lead a fair pay review for the public sector under the new coalition administration.
‘The idea is to improve fairness in the public sector and say that, between the lowest paid and highest paid in the public sector, there shouldn’t be a difference of more than 20 times,’ said prime minister David Cameron.
Unite, the largest union in the UK with 60,000 members in the voluntary sector, has written to Hutton asking for an investigation into charities receiving statutory funding.
The letter points out that pay in the charity sector is 21 per cent below that of the private sector, with the gap widening to 24 per cent in London.
Ninety per cent of respondants to a Unite survey feel that their well-being has been overlooked. Last month the union highlighted the case of Anchor Trust’s former CEO receiving £390,000 in 2008/09, while many of its employees, running homes for the elderly were paid just above the National Minimum Wage.
