Outlook unsettled for employee relations
October 2008
More organisations are being affected by increasingly turbulent employee relations, but the problem is concentrated in the public sector, according to research by the CIPD.
A survey was conducted among 1657 HR practitioners in August 2008, yielding 856 usable replies, 97 of which were from non-profit sector.
The survey found that a quarter of unionised organisations have been affected by strike action in the last 12 months and almost one in three unionised employers believe they may experience some strike action by some workers over the next year.
Mike Emmott, CIPD employee relations adviser, told Caritas that closer inspection of the 97 non-profit responses (59 per cent of which had trade unions) did not suggest concern about strike action or industrial unrest, but pointed to some clear issues about pay. He added that those delivering public sector contracts ‘should not worry about being infected with the public sector malaise’ as this was entirely down to how the organisations are managed internally.
