Paul Breckell shares his views on why charity finance directors should see themselves as leaders...
Finance professionals have a somewhat unfair reputation for being shrinking violets when it comes to up-front leadership. The stereotype of the careful and reserved accountant is still prevalent: managing the money; accounting with care and attention; and not surfacing in the organisation apart from the occasional hasty and awkward covert mission to the staff kitchen for more coffee. Although there are clearly parts of the charity finance director’s role where care and attention to detail and the burden of compliance are essential, there is an element of up-front strategic leadership that just can’t be delegated, whatever the size of the organisation.
