Cathy Pharoah and Mark Pincher take a closer look at the trends in corporate foundation giving
Donors, particularly major ones, still know remarkably little about the best way of giving away money to voluntary sector organisations. There is huge diversity of practice. And ‘hands-on’ might mean direct donor intervention of the Bill Gates style, or reliance on professional intermediaries such as, for example, New Philanthropy Capital and Impetus. For major corporate donors the issue often revolves specifically around whether their corporate community investment is carried out through establishing a foundation, or directly managed by the company and its community affairs staff.
