The £81bn worth of cuts detailed in the public spending and the expectation of many more after the comprehensive spending review announcements on 20 October are of great concern to many in the voluntary and charitable sector. There are many charities who are dependent upon the statutory sector for more than 50 per cent, or even all, of their funding who may regard themselves as very vulnerable.

Mark Jackson is a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the Staff College and the Open University.
He was an infantry officer who commanded his regiment on operations, has worked in the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall, at NATO headquarters in the Netherlands and as national liaison officer in the US where he was a guest lecturer at the Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia.
For the last four years he has been chief executive of St Richard’s Hospice, Worcester, and is currently studying for a masters degree in hospice leadership at the Lancaster University Management School.
