New Code of Good Governance for Northern Ireland
The Northern Ireland Assembly’s minister for social development, Margaret Ritchie, launched the Code of Good Governance for the voluntary and community sector on behalf of the Developing Governance Group in NICVA (the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action) on 6 June 2008. This was the result of consultations on a draft code a year ago...
The Code has been adapted from the English Good Governance Code and sets out seven key principles that form the basis of the code together with the most important supporting principles. These cover leadership, responsibilities, legal requirements and obligations, effective management, performance management delegation, integrity and openness.
The minister said ‘Good governance leads to good management, good performance, good stewardship of public money, good public engagement and, ultimately, good outcomes… in Northern Ireland… approximately one in five of all formal volunteers are involved in the running of voluntary organisations – as leaders, committee members or trustees. This new Code can support these volunteers in delivering good governance’.
