Making number speak
David Membrey looks at the role of annual accounts when it comes to maintaining transparency and accountability.
Traditionally, the annual report and accounts tends to be seen as a regulatory burden that a charity spends as little time and effort on and is consistent with carrying out its responsibilities. Once produced the accounts are sent to the few funders and regulators that demand them but are otherwise left to gather dust. I know that is a somewhat unfair characterisation and many charities put a lot of effort into making their annual accounts a publication they can be proud of, however they are in the minority.
