Academics and business people have all discussed the question of what makes a ‘good’ business for years. At a simple level, there are broadly two schools of thought on this. One supports the shareholder model in which the purpose of a ‘business’ is solely to maximise the value and returns for the shareholders. This means that everything the business does works towards this single ultimate goal; and the optimum reward package to attract the best skills pays for itself by delivering the best returns for shareholders.
