John Kingston talks about access to capital, fundraising and GK Chesterton
What attracted you to the voluntary sector?
At the tender age of 18 I jumped on a BOAC plane to Trinidad as a VSO volunteer to teach mathematics in a secondary school. Although I come from a family business background with a strong Christian ethic I was not on some sort of evangelical mission. It was just something I wanted to do before going up to Cambridge to read
Economics. After my degree I worked for two years in southern Africa as an Overseas Development Institute (ODI) Nuffield fellow – if you look around the sector and at our society it is amazing how many have done overseas voluntary work at an early stage of their careers.
