Much fundraising commentary and analysis refers to charities or third sector organisations generically as ‘the sector’. But referring to ‘the sector’ in a kind of ‘one-size-fits-all’ way does not do justice to the huge variation in the characteristics and financial profiles of fundraising charities. This variation importantly includes the degree of support attracted from the donating public.
