A system to monitor a board's maintenance and structure its cycle of meetings enhances effectiveness, says Chris Cornforth
One of the difficulties confronting any board is that it has a wide range of responsibilities but only limited time to carry them out. This raises a number of important challenges for board members. How can they keep in mind and balance their different responsibilities and roles? How can they plan the work of the board so that these responsibilities are carried out effectively? How can the board members learn from their actions? One useful tool for helping to think about these challenges is the governance cycle, summarised in figure 1which can be used to help plan a structured annual cycle of meetings.
