In the bleak mid-winter
Cuts in public funding should not be taking charities by surprise. Kate Hand reviews the political funding agenda and recommends early preparation
Since the UK faces a £175bn income shortfall in 2010 (not including structural debts), all the major political parties have acknowledged that there will have to be cuts to public service funding. The government now spends roughly £11bn [1] to £12bn [2] on the third sector each year, which makes up around 35 per cent of charities’ income, and this debate is therefore critical to many in the sector [3].
