How quickly the world changes! Since I was asked to write this piece, the government has published its white paper Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS,1 which has set out the biggest shake up of the NHS since 1974 and probably 1948. We have also been introduced to the concept of the ‘big society’.

Sir Nicholas Young has been chief executive of the British Red Cross since 2001 after six years as the chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Relief.
Previously he had been at the Sue Ryder Foundation, as secretary of development, where he set up the Sue Ryder nursing homes.
He was knighted for his services to cancer care in 2000.
