Government pledges continued support for the third sector
Kevin Brennan, the new OTS minister who took over from Phil Hope in the recent reshuffle, will co-chair a summit with Stuart Etherington (CEO of NCVO) on 24 November 2008 to discuss the economic crisis and its likely impact on civil society...
Hosts NCVO have invited sector leaders and other government representatives to lead a review of the current financial climate and look at lessons learned during the last recession, with the aim of reaching agreement on a way forward for voluntary and community organisations.
Brennan’s boss, Cabinet Office Minister Liam Byrne (who replaces Ed Miliband), confirmed: ‘In the light of recent global economic events, the Government is more determined than ever to support the third sector through the upcoming months and years. We are committed to ensuring that charities are supported in resolving any shortterm issues they may face as well as supporting them in the long term.’
He added: ‘I will continue to represent the interests of the sector at the newly founded National Economic Council, which will consider the impact of the current financial crisis on the economy as a whole.’
