As part of the £6.2bn savings challenge announced by the Treasury in May 2010, the Office for Civil Society (OCS) will be making £11m savings from its 2010/2011 budget.
The main targets are the National Youth Volunteering Charity v, Capacitybuilders, and the Commission for the Compact. Minister for Civil Society, Nick Hurd, made the point back in June, at the RBS SE100 Index awards, that social enterprises have ‘never been more important’. He said: ‘we need people who can create jobs, we need solutions to stubborn, expensive problems and we need community builders who can help communities shape solutions.’
Cabinet Office Minister, Francis Maude, has reiterated the point he made in his interview with Caritas back in March this year about ‘finding better ways of doing things.’ In an open letter to the voluntary, community and social enterprise sectors, he asked for ideas and examples from the sector on how best to do this. ‘Your voice is particularly important as you work on the front line delivering services, often to the most vulnerable people’ he said.
Citizen research from Pricewaterhouse Coopers in response to the spending review consultation found that the government needs to do much more to get its message across to the public on cutting the deficit.]
