Margaret Bolton analyses mission-related investment behaviour in grant-making foundations
The recent turmoil in the financial markets has had a damaging effect on grant-making foundations. Many have seen the value of their investment portfolios decline by 30 per cent; some have experienced even greater losses. The knock on impact on their grant making has yet to be felt but is likely to be significant. Given this context it may seem like extremely bad timing to be encouraging foundations to innovate in their investment practice by considering mission connected investment or MCI – investment which targets a market return for the asset class but which also contributes to achieving the foundation’s mission. But is it? It’s possible to make a case that the approach which underpins MCI could potentially help foundations better weather financial storms in the future.
