Dame Suzi Leather
Former probation officer Dame Suzi Leather talks about the end user, regulation and paragliding
What drew you to market research in the first instance?
I was doing some teaching while finishing my MA in European politics but did not want to be an academic. I took a market research job, but the major client was a tobacco company, so I had to move on. I joined a European consumer organisation. To balance the research and campaigning with a people perspective I volunteered at Holloway Prison. It was at this point I decided to retrain as a probation officer.

Dame Suzi became the Charity Commission's chair in 2006. Before this, she chaired the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and the School Food Trust. Previously, Dame Suzi was deputy chair of the Food Standards Agency and chair of the Exeter and District Community NHS Trust. She is a member of Consumer Focus and, last November, was asked to chair DEFRA's Council of Food Policy Advisers.
