Anthony Mayer to oversee creation social housing regulator for Government
June 2008
The Housing and Regeneration Bill is currently going through its House of Lords Committee stage which has seen some government amendments that include a requirement for the new Regulator to consult the Charity Commission on the implications for new standards for charitable housing associations.
The Commission had raised concerns that proposals in the Bill could undermine the independence of charities (see News review from March 2008).
The first chair of the new social housing regulator, the Office for Tenants and Social Landlords (Oftenant) was confirmed by Housing Minister Caroline Flint on 13 May as Anthony Meyer, the current Greater London Authority chief executive at City Hall, a position he has occupied for the eight years Ken Livingstone was Mayor of London. His initial brief will be to oversee the creation of Oftenant, establishing strategic direction in line with its statutory objectives and functions. Once established, it will be his responsibility to ensure that the regulator effectively carries out its key tasks of regulation, tenant protection and improving social landlord performance, with high standards of governance and probity, and protection of private and public sector investment.
