Background

J O Hambro Investment Management (JOHIM) was formed in 1986 to provide discretionary portfolio management for private individuals, related family interests and charities, be that via segregated portfolios or through specialist funds. In 2001 the entire share capital of the firm was acquired by the Credit Suisse Group and JOHIM continues to operate as an independent boutique subsidiary. As at 30th June 2011 JOHIM managed £3.6 billion of client assets including 84 charitable portfolios at £259 million.

Boutique Approach, Institutional Backing

JOHIM’s charity business provides trustees with a service that combines accountability with personal attention to detail, enabling them to fulfill their mandates and satisfy their need to demonstrate the suitability of their chosen investment manager. All charity portfolios, whatever their size, are managed on a segregated basis and investment goals are agreed to meet individual requirements. We do not run a single charity vehicle or model portfolios as this inflexible approach to investment management is the antithesis of our culture.

The only way, we believe, to see that the charity’s precise needs are met is for trustees to have a close relationship with the individuals that actually make the investment decisions. This means that there are no ‘relationship managers’ at JOHIM. The fact that the portfolio manager is responsible for all client communication and reporting, administration and all investment decisions means that no portfolio manager can typically have more than 60 client groups.

Charity Investment Committee

Our Charity Investment Committee (CIC) is comprised of a specialist team of portfolio managers who between them look after our charity clients. The CIC is responsible for developing the most suitable investment approach to managing charitable assets and pays special attention to the current issues facing the sector, including an appreciation of the Charity Commission’s guidelines and the associated regulatory environment.
