About Smith & Williamson

Smith & Williamson is one of the top ten largest firms of accountants in the UK and our investment management business has over £11.5 billion of funds under management and advice (as at 31 October 2011). We employ 1,500 people and operate from 11 principal offices in the UK and Ireland, providing accounting, investment management and financial advisory services to a diverse range of clients.

Charities

We have a dedicated team of experts, from all disciplines within the firm, who deal specifically with the charity sector. Our services to this sector range from audit & accounting, tax planning and HR advice to treasury and investment management.

At Smith & Williamson we focus our energy and expertise on helping our clients. We work alongside Trustees and management who have a will to succeed, who want to make a difference and who desire to leave their charities well placed for future challenges.

We have over 500 charity clients of varying activities and sizes. This gives us a wide breadth of knowledge which enables us to add real value to those charities which we work with.

Services we provide to our clients include:

Charity audit and accounting services

Audit services are seen in some quarters as a loss leader and a gateway for other services. We do not share this view; our external scrutiny of our client’s business strategy, internal processes and future forecasts is a route for us to add real value:

We establish strong professional partnerships with our charity clients, which are mutually beneficial. The audit outcome ought to be financial statements that reflect our joint commitment to excellence.

The key to a successful partnership is good communication, through regular contract and clarity of communication. Such communication enables us to develop our relationship with our clients, provide informed audit services and provide the depth of service our clients require.

We place great emphasis on planning. For our charity clients, this means liaising closely with management and Trustees to anticipate and identify potential issues, including charity law issues. We work closely with our clients to identify an appropriate response.

Our clients tell us that our measured approach, coupled with our expertise, delivers a service which offers real value for money.

Investment management services

Trustees now have greater investment freedom than previously, but face unique - and varying - challenges.

Our dedicated charities investment management team has an in depth understanding of these challenges and the regulatory environment in which charities operate. In response we have developed a specialised approach, which adapts to our charitable clients’ exact needs.

This is supported by a strong working relationship between the lead investment manager and the Trustees, with quarterly performance management reports supplemented by personal reporting and ongoing dialogue. Online access is also provided, so that you can review your investment portfolio at any time.

Our services include discretionary investment management, advisory investment services and cash management services, including access to our high interest rate Cash Fund.
