At Hardie Caldwell LLP we recognise the fact that charities and not-for-profit organisations are faced with complex accounting and regulatory requirements. So in order to make accounting life simpler for our clients we created a specialist team to provide competent accountancy services. We call this team our Charities Focus Group.

Our Knowledge

Our Charities Focus Group has a wealth of experience. Our approach involves firstly developing an understanding of the activities of each client, in particular their income sources, and then tailoring our work to provide an efficient and focused service.

We have worked with charities that are funded by a mixture of income sources from European Funds, Scottish Executive, Community Planning Partnerships, Local Authorities and Social Services together with private funding. We have experience of dealing with cocktails of funding and the issues surrounding grant utilisation, together with fund accounting. This depth and breadth of experience is vital and underpins all that we do for our clients.

Our Services

We provide a range of services to our many charity clients. These range from small local charities, to medium and large well known organisations. We believe in playing an active role with trustees, providing assistance in:

  • Audits
  • Independent examinations
  • Production of comprehensive statutory accounts
  • Help with OSCR Annual Return and general correspondence with OSCR
  • Production of practical Standing Financial Procedures Manuals for financial cycles.
  • Assistance with projections/budgets and related cash flow forecast
  • Production of monthly/quarterly management accounts
  • Maintenance of account records and production of VAT returns
  • Support with routine and complex Value Added Tax issues.
  • Through our Payroll Bureau Service we can assist with the preparation and processing of payroll with the application of PAYE/NIC and all other related payroll regulations.
  • Developing comprehensive internal audit programmes;
  • Risk review facilitation and reporting
  • Strategic review facilitation and reporting
  • Education of Trustees with respect to their duties

Our Team

Marion Hopper is the partner leading this group and she is ably supported by a team of experienced people - two Senior Managers, Karen Hewitson and David Lindsay who in turn are supported by three qualified Chartered Accountants and nine other professionals. As the partner in our Charities Focus Group, Marion is responsible for all services provided to our charity clients from financial management, through internal and external auditing to practical systems and controls manuals and risk work.

Our experience also strengthens with our association with HCWA Limited – a national association of independent accountants. The London based associate, Horwath Clark Whitehill LLP, has a dedicated not for profit team with an extensive national client base, and were past winners of the UK Charity Award. This association gives us, and our clients, the best of both worlds – we can provide the personal attention expected of a medium sized firm whilst providing all the high level technical backup support expected from a national firm.
